Adaption of Modernist Villa by Walter Loos

Originally built in the 1930s by renowned architect Walter Loos, this remarkable private residence in Vienna’s prestigious 19th district was to undergo an extensive renovation and expansion. Labvert has developed a design concept that carefully preserves the home’s distinctive modernist character while elevating it to meet the expectations of contemporary living.

According to this concept, the striking cubic composition of the terraced villa, as conceived by Loos, will remain clearly legible. To respond to the demand for additional space, a new volume will be sensitively added to the existing structure. Conceptualized as an independent architectural element, the extension features a glass façade whose reflective qualities deliberately contrast with the plastered stone surfaces of the original building.

The new volume will accommodate a generous master suite and a new kitchen, while the basement level will be expanded to include parking for three cars, as well as a spa area with sauna, home cinema, and wine cellar. The garden in turn will be reinterpreted with a contemporary sensibility through the integration of a pool that harmoniously complements the existing terraced landscape.

The historic structure will be preserved in its material integrity and meticulously restored. Character-defining elements—such as the wide cantilevered sun awning—will be carefully repaired and reinstated to their original quality.

Nearly a century after its creation, the villa is set to re-emerge as a refined gem of Viennese residential culture—poised between historic substance and contemporary architectural expression.
